When it comes to caring for a loved one who is bedridden, there are certainly a lot of factors that come into play. How can you make them comfortable? How should they be treated so they don’t get sore from prolonged pressure on their skin?
Here at Home Instead Senior Care in Wilmington, NC, we have many years of experience providing affordable, in-home care services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. But if at any given moment a skilled caregiver isn’t around, there are things you can do assist someone who lacks independent mobility.
There are clearly times when your loved one wants to get out of bed, whether that means simply moving to a chair or to a different room. This may not be advisable if it poses an actual risk to the patient, especially if it creates constant pain and suffering. It is imperative to follow the physician’s orders, but if the patient is on medication to deal with their pain, it is advisable to wait until the medicine kicks in before attempting movement.
The amount of distance also comes into consideration. If the patient wants to simply move to a chair, put it up against the bed to make it easier for them. If they want a little exercise by walking to the chair, ensure this is even possible, and guide them over to the chair. We recommend paying close attention to how our caregivers move the patient in order to practice good lifting techniques. This is significant not only to avoid injuring the patient, but also yourself.
If the unforeseen happens and your loved one falls out of bed, be very careful. If the patient has been hurt, get in touch with a nurse immediately. If the situation is worse than feared, contact the paramedics. Otherwise, you may need additional help from a friend or family member moving the patient in order to support their weight without further injury.
As always, it is vital that you pay very close attention to the way a nurse or caregiver treats the patient. Ask as many questions as possible, including having them demonstrate techniques for proper guidance. And if they need assistance to walk to another room, make sure it is absolutely safe to do so before making the attempt. For example, whether the patient has the strength to walk in the first place. If they do, provide plenty of support. If they can’t, get in touch with the registered nurse for help.
